Editor's Notes 3/11/96

We are in the process of a major update of Web Corpus. I had hoped to do it all at once, but the project is getting out of hand, so we're going to add to it in small spurts 'till we get caught up. The Web is on FIRE in Corpus Christi with a lot of people out pounding the pavement and selling both Internet connections and Web pages. Right now there are around 7,000 web pages mentioning Corpus Christi indexed on Alta Vista. (We don't have an outside sales staff so you need to call or email us if you are interested in our computer consulting services or Web design. Our phone number is +1 512 882-5253. We are way behind on looking at and adding these 7,000 sites to this list, since we can only work on it at night and when we aren't helping paying customers. As of Monday, March 11, we've added everyone who has sent email to webmaster@blake.com requesting a listing and will start on the others soon. Your feedback is always welcome. We hope you enjoy our little list and would appreciate a link from your page if appropriate.

Read about the The Blue Ribbon Campaign for Online Freedom of Speech, Press and Association. The recently passed telecommunications reform legislation had provisions banning "indecent" material on the Internet, using the standard in the Pacifica case (that's George Carlin's 7 Dirty words you can't say on Television [now the Internet too]).

What's Hot

Aside from Our Stuff some Corpus area sites worth checking out are Corpus Christi dot com (an electronic yellow pages for CC), The Natural Toxins Institute at TAMU Kingsville, and The Raven & The Sparrow Internet Cafe' (we really like the idea of an Internet cafe). .wear@the net appears to be the first Corpus Christi firm actually selling products on the net. they have a nice catalog. Captain Wallace Kelley breaks the mold of bland business pages with a photo filled layout for his charter service. The Corpus Christi Caller Times is getting better now that they don't load all those gifs. There's always the brother-in-law page, Software Kinetics, which is in fact my sister's-husband's brother's page. Citizens Bank has a great pages that proves even a bank VP can learn to design web pages.

  • It's kinda hard to find Dr. Pat Michaud's famous Strawberry Pop-Tart Blow-Torches page or it's companion Fun with Grapes - A Case Study (I suspect he doesn't want his students finding it!) He has an additional homepage behind the first, that you access by clicking on his name in the first page.
• Del Mar College finally got a school-wide homepage online, though the original Del Mar Collage Computer Science Dpt. Page has more interesting links, including a slightly out of date but still useful Comparison of Corpus Christi Internet Service Providers. Check out UCLA (University of Corpus, Left on Ayers)
• Marine Science Institute - University of Texas UT in Port A provides a peek into their facilities, (including everything you ever wanted to know about their boats), tide tables (slow graphics) and a current porjects page

• The Greater Corpus Christi Business Alliance (that's the Chamber of Commerce & Tourist Bureau if you're from anywhere but Corpus) including tourist and visitor information, information on The Port of Corpus Christi, and the Small Business Development Center [recently updated].
• American & Foreign Hubcaps & Accessories sells mail order custom and OEM wheelcovers via an 800 number.
• The Armchair Commanders Games & Hobbies sells board games, computer games, and role playing games.
• Business Today is a single page ad for a print magazine.
• Betty B's Ingleside Fashions on the net has a storefront and Johnny Mathis links.
• The Cantina Santa Fe, a pretty cool drinkin spot with their music schedule and menu online.
• The Corpus Christi Caller Times (our local daily paper) has an electronic edition that is graphic intense. Some of the updated daily. Their best feature allows you to do full text searches on back issues of the paper . Too bad they don't tell you how complete the database is (a search on "Farenthold" turned up this and this, but missed the big feature they did on personal homepages in November '95).
• Captain Wallace Kelley (the fishing guy on channel 6 news) has a home page for his fishing business with some cool fishing photos.
• Citizens Bank does a good corporate image page including Corpus Christi links and lots of info about the bank.
• Corpus Christi dot com is a Corpus Christi Electronic yellow pages, restaurant guide and more. There is a lot of good stuff. Too bad they compete with us for web design (buy a hyperlink listing from them and have us do your web page :-)
• CC Internet Mall (Would someone tell these carpetbaggers that Corpus is on the South side of the bay!)
• Da Hut was one of the first Corpus Christi Businesses on the net, but has one of the dullest presentations we've seen. Buy a color monitor guys!
• Fax Access from junk Faxes to the Internet.
• Half Price Books and Cafe Calypso (their in store coffee bar) both have a single page storefront.
• I Wear Tee Shirts sells Internet related T-shirts online.
• KRIS TV, our NBC affiliate Channel 6 is now on the WWW. By the way the picture on their front page is not from Corpus. Those are beautiful Tropical Cocopalms. We don't have volcanoes or hula girls either.
• Media Basics is a creative high tech advertising group that is having quite an effect on the way the tourism business is done in Corpus Christi.
• Medical Homepatient Equipment has information on Lymphedema on their storefront.
• On-Line International is promoting jobs, real estate and other business information.
• Pagan Lewis Motors.
• Pepe's Mexican Food Resteraunt has their menu on-line.
• Psytep Corporation scares me.. lotsa spy stuff and corperate intelligence stuff. If I say anything bad about them, I'm afraid I may find transcripts of our 1-900 calls posted somewhere.
• The Raven & The Sparrow Internet Cafe' has a graphics rich site with some Java animation. They also have another page Here. [recent update]
• Routh & Associates is loss prevention consulting firm with a short blip on the net, their logo, however, didn't scan well.
• 6 West & Associates is a marketing/ad agency run in part by an old buddy of Blake's. Too bad they compete with Farenthold Consulting for Web design!
• Shelley's Travel Service has a page with lowest air fares from Corpus Christi updated weekly.
• Shitrs & More has a simple page selling custom shirts, a computer T and an Interconnect (local ISP) shirt.
• Software Kinetics is my brother-in-law's software company.
• Spectrum Properties Real Estate and Investments has a few commercial properties listed online.
• TRAC (Travel Automation Consulting) is a consulting firm for travel agents.
• .wear@the net Sells Internet shirts & mugs. Nice catalog, cool products, but no forms based ordering.
• Whitten Real Estate in Port A has some condo and Single family listings. A Farenthold consulting client worth visiting if you wanna start livin' on island time.
• Winward Properties, a real estate firm has an on-line business card up, but no links. I suspect they are working on on-line listings which will be cool. Imagine browsing properties all over the world from the Internet. I want the MLS contract to move that book to the web!

• The Lance Bruun Campaign Page profiles Republican state representative candidate Lance Bruun (lbruun@blake.com) and his stand on the issues.

• The La Belle Project is a cool site with updates on salving the wreck of the La Belle, believed to be one of La Salle's ships. Much of the work on this project is being done at the Corpus Christi Museum of Natural History.

• Corpus Christi Radio & TV Listings is a list (nothing more) of radio and television Stations compiled from a statwide list.
• It's amazing some of the things a search of the net will turn up. Take for example Will Christopher Baer's short story Corpus Christi published in The Next Savage State, the enhanced, electronic version of The New Censorship.

• Historic rainfall Corpus or Other Texas Cities derived from The National Climatic Data Center is maintained by the Texas USGS.
• Information about auto racing course nationwide features the Cabaniss Home Page.
• The American Recovery Association Inc. (a trade group of repo men) has Web information on Universal Investigators in Corpus.
• There are also web sites down south worth checking out in The Rio Grande Valley and McAllen.

• Southwest Airlines (cool "home gate") profiles their destination cities, including Corpus Christi.
• The Tejano Page has a tribute to slain Corpus Christi tejano star Selena complete with an account of a visit to Corpus right after her tragic death. Also included are a ton of pictures and sound clips.
• In HotWired: World Beat - Rough Guide - Texas, Wired Magazine's electronic Rough Guide visits Corpus Christi.
• Corpus Windsurfing FAQ maintained by Andrew Condon in Dublin. It is also available via an FTP site at the University of Vermont.
